The rules stay the same, but each layout changes the shape of the board, which tiles open first, and how much planning the game needs.

Mahjong Connect has its own rules. You remove matching tiles only when a line can be drawn between them through empty space, without crossing other tiles. As the board clears, more pairs can become available, so one move may open the way to the next.

Mahjong Connect Gravity uses the same rule for matching tiles, but the board changes after every move. When you remove a pair, the remaining tiles slide into the empty spaces. This can open a new route or make a blocked pair playable after the tiles move.
